Creating the Right Conditions for Innovation

Writer: Dan BentleyDan Bentley

Leadership is about more than managing an organisation, it's about creating an environment where innovation can truly flourish. A while back we spoke with Doug Taylor, the CEO of The Smith Family, and he offered a compelling perspective on what it takes to drive meaningful innovation.

Innovation flourishes when teams feel safe to challenge the norm and experiment with fresh approaches. At its core, this isn’t about disruption for the sake of it, but about making a lasting impact.

The Foundation of Innovative Leadership

According to Doug, Innovative leadership begins with two fundamental ingredients: a disruptor and a leader who gives permission to disrupt. This isn't about creating chaos, but about establishing an environment where challenging the status quo is not just accepted, but actively encouraged.

Doug also believes that innovation must be deeply rooted in an organisation's core mission, not just a superficial add-on or a knee-jerk reaction to external pressures. Too often, innovation fails because the groundwork of understanding why it’s needed hasn’t been done.

Culture and Leadership Balance

A strong culture is essential for innovation to succeed, and a big part of that is psychological safety, in other words creating a workplace where team members feel comfortable presenting new ideas and challenging existing practices.

Leaders must strike a delicate balance between efficient service delivery and making space for new ways of thinking. The most successful leaders create an environment that allows these seemingly contradictory approaches to coexist.

People and capabilities play a huge role in innovation. Doug advocates for leadership teams that combine operational expertise with curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace ambiguity. But true innovation goes beyond organisational boundaries. The biggest breakthroughs happen when organisations look at the broader system they operate within, collaborating and sharing insights across traditional boundaries.

The Power of Storytelling and Measuring Impact

As a self-described "chief storyteller," Doug understands the power of narrative in maintaining organisational focus. Storytelling helps reinforce purpose and drive alignment. However, innovation isn’t about creating something new for the sake of novelty, it must be relentlessly focused on outcomes. The ultimate measure of success is about finding better ways to solve real-world problems and create meaningful impact.

Doug’s approach offers a blueprint for leaders who want to foster genuine innovation. It’s about giving permission to challenge the norm, building a strong culture, staying mission-focused, and committing to real change.
