Being overly consumed by the demands of daily operations and losing sight of the bigger picture is a common scenario in the social sector, where the pressure to respond to immediate needs can overshadow long-term goals. But as you’d be aware, the key to driving meaningful innovation and lasting impact is found in staying relentlessly focused on your organisation’s mission.

The Fuel for Innovation


As leaders in the social sector, we're often told that innovation is the key to creating lasting change. But innovation needs attention and direction, and when we are under-resourced and juggling a lot of change at once, it can be really difficult. For people to overcome this, innovation requires a clear sense of purpose and a driving force that compels us to prioritise innovation, to step out of our comfort zones and to try new things.


As an organisation, your mission is what encourages people to take those bold steps, to let go of what they're really comfortable with and step into something new. In other words, mission focus is the reason behind the innovation. It's the "why" that gives your team the motivation to embrace change and push the boundaries of what's possible.


Deliberate, Not Accidental


Here's the catch - mission focus doesn't just happen organically. It's a deliberate, strategic activity that requires ongoing attention and effort from leaders.

The reality is that people can easily become numb to the mission over time, as they get caught up in the day-to-day operations of the organisation. As leaders, it's our job to continuously join the dots for our teams, making the connection between their work and the bigger picture.


We need to build this into the way that we work from many different perspectives, so that any type of change or any type of leadership message that's in the organisation is constantly linked to the importance of the work that we do.


Strategic and Ongoing Conversations


Embedding mission focus into your organisation's DNA requires a strategic and ongoing approach to communication. It's not enough to simply have a mission statement on your website or in your strategic plan. You need to weave it into every aspect of your work, from team meetings to individual conversations.


The true test of mission focus is whether people at all levels of the organisation can accurately articulate the key strategic priorities and the mission. If the answer is yes, you're on the right track. If not, it's time to up your efforts.


Setting a Clear Focus


Another common challenge that organisations face is the temptation to try and do everything well, rather than focusing on a few key priorities. This can lead to a scattered approach and a lack of meaningful progress.


When we say yes to something, we're saying no to something else. It doesn't mean you drop the ball on those other things, but what it does mean is it says “this is the direction we are going in and this is what needs to be prioritised.” An innovation strategy can be a powerful tool in this regard, helping you to clearly define your mission and the specific, measurable goals you're working towards. By avoiding jargon and keeping your plan accessible, you can ensure that everyone in your organisation understands the path forward.


Embedding Mission Focus in Your Culture


Mission focus goes beyond just having an innovation strategy, it's about making it an integral part of your organisation's culture. The most innovative and impactful not-for-profits are those where the mission is in your face the moment you step inside.


You can walk in there as a random person off the street and you can feel this stuff as soon as you walk in. You can hear it. You can see it.


This level of mission integration doesn't happen by accident. It requires a deliberate effort to ensure that every conversation, every decision, and every initiative is aligned with the organisation's core purpose. It's about making the mission a living, breathing part of your culture.


Measuring and Communicating Progress


Embedding mission focus is just the first step but to truly harness its power, you need to measure and communicate your progress along the way.

It is crucial for maintaining motivation and addressing challenges. The conversation touches on the importance of being transparent about progress, whether it is positive, negative, or neutral.


Regularly visiting your progress, both successes, and setbacks, helps to keep your team engaged and focused. It also allows you to make informed decisions about where to allocate your resources and what areas need more attention.


In the social sector, we're fortunate to have an abundance of purpose and meaning in our work. But harnessing that power requires a deliberate, strategic approach to mission focus. By embedding mission focus into every aspect of your organisation, setting a clear focus, and measuring and communicating your progress, we can unlock the true potential of innovation and create an even greater social impact.
